Kodiaks host zones, win gold

The St. Thomas More Kodiaks hosted the NWASSA Sr. High 1A Volleyball Zones this past Saturday – it was to have been a two day event but freezing rain on Friday made that impossible.
Visiting teams included: Ecole Heritage (Falher), Rainbow Lake, Paul Rowe (Manning), Fort Vermillion, Hines Creek, John D’Or, Savanna and Fox Creek – five total teams on the men’s side, eight on the women’s side.
On the women’s side, the Kodiaks placed first in their pool’s round robin play with three wins against Hines Creek, John D’Or and Savanna, Hines Creek second, losing only to STM, John D’Or third with one win against Savanna and Savanna fourth.
In the women’s other pool, Ecole Heritage placed first with three wins, Paul Rowe second with a loss to Ecole Heritage, Fort Vermillion third going three sets to win one game against Fox Creek. Fox Creek placed fourth.
On the men’s side, the Kodiaks went four wins, no losses in round robin play, Ecole Heritage was second with three wins, losing only to the Kodiaks. Fort Vermillion placed third winning in three sets against Rainbow Lake and Paul Rowe. Paul Rowe placed fourth with one win with one win against Rainbow Lake and Rainbow Lake was fifth.
In the first round of women’s playoffs, it was John D’Or against Paul Rowe with John D’or taking the win, Fort Vermillion losing to Hines Creek. In the second round, the Kodiaks defeated John D’Or and Hines Creek took Ecole Heritage to face the Kodiaks in the final. The Kodiaks took the first set 25-17, in the second set the Hines Creek Tigers fought hard, taking the lead initially. The lead switched hands several times but the Kodiaks won the final set and the game with a 25-23 score.
In the men’s side playoffs, it was Ecole Heritage against Fort Vermillion in the first round, Ecole Heritage taking the win, then Heritage faced the Kodiaks for the championship, with the Kodiaks taking the win.
The Kodiaks will now head off to Provincials, along with the Hines Creek
Tigers who go on the wild card.
